Our next song is kind of interesting...

The lyrics for our next song, "The World Is Made of Fire", are taken from various translations of the fragments of Heraclitus arranged by Kris in such a way as to constitute an artistically interesting set of lyrics.  It's also a very pretty song. We are excited for you guys to hear it.

It's Our Birthday

Exactly four years ago I decided it was time to instantiate some Monadic properties once again.  I recruited Carrie Jenkins and Ben Bradley to the cause.  The 21st Century Monads were born!  Later Hille Paakkunainen joined the band and we've only gotten better since.

Our first song was "My Paper Was Rejected Again", released while the trials and tribulations of attempting to publish in modern journals was still fresh in my head. While the blood was still hot. While the passions were still strong.  The passions are always strong.  Fortunately, most of the time the passions are positively directed and invigorating.

I love philosophy and have felt incredibly fortunate to be able to pursue it as a living.  Like many people in our profession, I literally cannot imagine doing anything else.  How amazing then it is for me to also have the opportunity to make music with my extremely talented bandmates.  In the last four years, I've written or co-written close to 70 songs, most of which have been released in our five albums.

I think our fifth album is our best album yet.  There are three songs left to release.

Thanks for sticking with us and listening to our music.

How to "Purchase" Interlocutor via a Donation to the Charity of Your Choice

Hopefully you already have enjoyed our first single, “The Ballad of Tim”, which is available at our website:

Over the course of the next few months, we’ll release further songs from our new album “Interlocutor”.  We are very excited with how things have turned out, and we think that you are really going to enjoy the album.

As always, we’ll release free versions of the songs in .mp3, itunes .m4a, and .ogg formats at semi-regular intervals as the semester progresses.

But if you can't wait until the remaining songs are released, you can purchase the entire album now, including artwork, liner notes, and lyrics.  Also – the songs we release for free are released as mp3s, m4as, and oggs – but the songs you get if you “purchase” the album come in 16 bit 44.1 khz .wav files, which are most suitable for burning your own CDs.

Just as we did with our previous album, “Body, Monad, World”, we are also going to offer you the opportunity to “purchase” the uncompressed 16 bit/44.1 khz .wav files in order to raise some money for good causes.  Our goal is to avoid the overhead costs associated with having our songs on a third-party website.  And we’d like to avoid having your money in our pockets even for a short while.

So what we are going to do is this. You can purchase the uncompressed .wav files by taking the following steps. First, make a donation to the charity of your choice in the amount that you think is appropriate.  There is no minimum donation, but we of course recommend that you be generous!

Second, send an email to the following email address:

In this email, simply tell us that you have made a charitable donation; you don’t need to tell us where if you don’t want to.  We’d appreciate if you’d tell us the amount donated since we would like to know how much money has been raised in this fashion. However, we won’t require that you do this.  There is no minimum amount you must donate (and obviously no maximum amount either).  We are simply going to take your word that you have made a donation.

After you have sent the email, you will receive an email in response that will contain a link directing you where to download a .zip file that contains all the songs.   Also included in this package will be liner notes, a .pdf with a printable cd-booklet, and bonus remixes of four of the songs.

No money needs to go into our pockets even temporarily and there are no overhead costs.   Every cent of every dollar you donate will go straight to the charity of your choice, and in return you get the full album immediately in a higher-resolution format.   We aren't trying to make money with this endeavor -- we are trying to do a little good for others.

As mentioned, the .wav files will be 16 bit/44.1 khz, which is the same bit and sample rate as a CD. So the quality of the sound will be somewhat better than the free itunes/.mp3/.ogg files we’ll release for free to the public.

If you’re not sure where to donate, there are websites like http://www.charitynavigator.org/

The last time we tried this, we raised a little over 1500$ US dollars in money for charity.  We hope to beat this amount this time.  We aren't trying to make money with this endeavor -- we are trying to do a little good for others.

So a quick recap: make a donation to the charity of your choice, email the Monads telling them you did this at 21stcenturymonads@gmail.com and receive a link to download the music.

And as always thanks for listening.

Some fun facts about "Interlocutor", the forthcoming fifth album by the 21st Century Monads.

Some fun facts about "Interlocutor", the forthcoming fifth album by the 21st Century Monads.

1.  Interlocutor consists of twelve songs.

2.  It is exactly 44.4 minutes long.  How did that happen??? (This is not counting pauses introduced by cd players as tracks change.)

3.  It is the second album on which our fourth member, the Infinite Progression, plays the drums.

4.  She also sings on some of the songs on this album.

5.  One of the songs for this album was first drafted about 9 years ago, but wasn't recorded until last   year.

6.  We began recording this album sometime early 2011. Recording finished sometime around May 2013.

7.  The songs collectively take up a little over 50 gigabytes of hard drive space.  Isn't that nuts?

8.  As always, we will be releasing free .mp3, .m4a, and .ogg versions of the songs sequentially, on a mostly weekly schedule.

9.  We will be "selling" the whole album again the same way we did last time, that is, "customers" can purchase this album by making a donation to the charity of their choice.  The files our "customers" will receive will be 16 bit 44.1 khz files, i.e., the standard compact disc format. More  details will be provided later on this blog.

10.  It is our best album to date. We think you will really enjoy it.

More soon!
